ABOUT YAME LANTERNS AND SHIRAKI CRAFTS
What is Yame Lantern?
Yame lanterns, known as Japanese Bon Festival lanterns, are designated as a traditional craft by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and boast a tradition of about 200 years. Shiraki Kogei continues to protect this tradition and carefully pass on the handiwork of artisans.
Our company has been making lanterns (fire boxes) in Yame, Kyushu's largest traditional craft production area, blessed with abundant nature. The long history of Yame lanterns, the manufacturing techniques cultivated by our predecessors, and their beautiful designs are representative of Japanese crafts, and we feel grateful and proud to be involved in this work and to continue making them. We believe that our mission is to properly inherit the "skills" as traditions, to train young craftsmen, and to propose products that blend into modern lifestyles by utilizing the latest technology of each era, without being bound by past values. We hope to deliver the "newness" that is born from this to everyone.
